#75 My first pot of 2016 1
White stoneware, French white, commercial underglaze
This from my first day at the studio. I was nervous! I had just joined, I didn’t know anyone—when you walk into the studio and there are a bunch of people there do you introduce yourself to everyone? Or just let them get on with what they’re doing? What’s more awkward—and I wanted people to think I was good at pottery! So I threw a pretty small thing to make sure I wouldn’t mess up.
This was obviously pre-smush—I deformed this by grabbing it. At this point I didn’t know I wanted to do the smush but I knew I wanted to post-wheel deform my 2016 pots in some way. This idea came in part from an experience I had in 2015 where I had to take a pot off the wheel with my hands because there was no bat and I smushed it a bit and liked it and in part from a conversation Rémi and I had about what might make a cool design for a lamp.
